I Snuck Through the Door
Before I start blogging about photography, filmmaking, and general ramblings about whatever suites me…and you, I figure I should give you some background so you can decide if I might have any idea about the things I blog about.
First of all, I’m pretty much self-taught. I didn’t have mentors to guide me along a traditional path. I don’t advise it for others, and I wish I did have formal training and mentors to teach me skills from the ground up. But despite that, I still managed to have a great career. And I’m still doing what I love.
I started working in video production and photography while I was in college. I decided what I wanted to do and just nudged my way into positions I probably wasn’t qualified for. But, I quickly figured out how things were done…and excelled.
Most of my time has been spent making TV commercials. Shooting, directing, producing, and editing. To keep sharp with cinematography skills, I’ve always tried to spend time with a still camera by shooting dramatic portfolios for friends, models and actors, experimenting with lighting, composition, and mood.
I worked on a few movies. One of my business partners was Steven Soderbergh’s producer. So I cut a couple of movie trailers for Steven and did second unit director/camera for a scene in his “Out of Sight”. And just after hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, I was production manager on Jean-Claud Van Damme’s “Until Death”. Movies required a long-term commitment, so I really never pursued them.
These days, in addition to free-lancing, I shoot video and photography for a community college. Education is so important and I really enjoy using my skills to further their mission.
There’s something I really love about framing up a shot, whether it’s with a still or video camera. Both photography or cinematography use the same principles of image-making. I love making people look great.
I’m going to try to have a new blog each week. Check back periodically and I’ll share some thoughts about this wonderful profession and many stories about a few crazy productions I’ve been on.
I keep on keepin’ at it and look forward to seeing some awesome talent in the other end of my camera lens.
